The Aggressor Gene by Carl Pfeiffer is a science fiction novel following the beautiful marine biologist Susan Miller and her brilliant research studies under the sea. Susan studies the behaviors of squid and octopus at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. After a couple of marine research divers disappear, Susan is sought out to help find out what is going on, where she soon finds herself in the Western Pacific investigating increased submarine seismic activity.
Pfeiffer brings to the table a very technical, but unique storyline. Is it possible there are giant squid out there devouring human flesh within a split second? Could there be something in the DNA make-up that could create such a sea monster? Without an eye-witness siting, researchers are left to question what is really out there in the ocean. I am in no way, shape, or form a scientist; however, the details were believable and made me wonder what was really true and what was fictitious.
The author is a professor of biomedical sciences, and with his credentials I dare not question what part of this story is fiction. Of course, that is the idea. That is the beauty of science fiction. At the end of the book, there is a note to the reader that one has to decide for themselves.
The Aggressor Gene was a pretty quick read for me. There were a lot of characters, in depth dialogue and different associations that were sometimes hard to keep track of it all. The experiences of the characters were exciting and made the short chapters quick and enjoyable. As I mentioned before, the concept is unique. I really had to sort out in my mind what was really possible, and I learned a great deal about the Molluscan species, even if some of the details were fabricated a bit.
I believe that readers who are into marine biology or into science in general will really enjoy this novel. The Aggressor Gene by Carl Pfeiffer was definitely a thrilling read for me. It’s definitely something that got my wheels turning.
